An ecosystem consists of interactions between both biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors. Abiotic factors are all non-living influences that play a role in an ecosystem. Examples of abiotic factors of an ecosystem include air, light, minerals and water, but also temperature and precipitation. The abiotic factors determine the limits of where organisms can grow. If a certain ecosystem has a very high salt content for example, only organisms that can tolerate or have a preference for high salinity can occur there.
